Land & Animal Care

Our Practices

Good Stewardship

We work to be good stewards of the land and our animals.

Wood Ranch management centers on healthy pasture, wildlife habitat, rotational grazing, and humane handling of cattle raised in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

🌲

Environmentally Sustainable

The ranch is a two-time winner of the South Dakota Outstanding Tree Farmer award in recognition for land stewardship.

🦌

Wildlife Friendly

The ranch supports native fauna including elk, birds, badgers, spotted skunks, mule deer, and other indigenous wildlife.

🌾

Native Grasslands

Rolling mixed-grass prairie gives cattle room to roam while managed rotation allows pasture recovery.

Wildlife Friendly

Managed for cattle and native wildlife.

Wood Ranch is a haven for native fauna including burrowing owls, grouse, red-tailed hawks, western meadow larks, magpies, gophers, badgers, spotted skunks, mule deer, and herds of Rocky Mountain elk.

The land is managed intentionally to sustain wildlife habitat with elk-friendly fencing, protective tree coverage, water access, and wildlife grazing.

Native Grasslands

Rotational grazing supports pasture recovery.

The ranch includes rolling pasture of undisturbed native mixed-grass prairie that thrives in the drier climate of the Southern Black Hills. The livestock is rotated through pastures to allow for recovery and long-term land management.

Native grasses include blue grama, needlegrass, globemallow, spiderwort, and prairie coneflower. Other abundant plants include soapweed yucca, western wallflower, and black-eyed susans.

No Feedlots

Pasture comes first.

W9 cattle graze their entire lives in the beautiful Black Hills region and never step a hoof in a feedlot. They have room to roam, shelter in ponderosa pine forests, and access to plentiful water.
